Signs You May Need a Root Canal
Sometimes it can be hard to tell on your own if you need a root canal, so we’ve listed some of the most common signs of deep damage and infection. We encourage you to schedule an appointment at our office so we can take X-rays and examine your teeth to properly identify what is causing your pain.
- Swollen or tender gums
- Sudden onset of tooth pain
- Extreme sensitivity to hot or cold
- Sharp pain when chewing or biting down
- Prolonged tooth pain
The Root Canal Procedure
Before your procedure begins, we’ll completely numb the area surrounding your tooth so you won’t feel anything except slight pressure while we work. Once the area is numb and prepared, we will drill a small hole into your tooth to access the pulp. Through there, we clean out the infected pulp and disinfect the inside of your tooth. Then, we will fill the inside of your tooth to prevent bacteria from causing an infection in the future. Depending on your needs, we may recommend topping your tooth with a dental crown for additional protection.
Root Canal FAQs
What’s the difference between a root canal and an extraction?
A root canal is a procedure we do when we want to save an existing natural tooth by clearing out the infected pulp. An extraction—when the entire tooth is pulled from its socket—is usually a last resort after we’ve exhausted all other options. We always try to retain your natural teeth.
How much does a root canal cost?
Root canals have been misleadingly portrayed in movies as this awful procedure, but root canal therapy itself is not actually the cause of any discomfort. It’s the tooth infection that causes toothaches, which can worsen if the tooth is left untreated. We always provide gentle root canal therapy that will relieve you of infection and any discomfort or pressure the infection may be causing.
Root Canal Cost
There are a variety of factors that go into the cost of a root canal. During your consultation, we will examine your teeth and provide an accurate cost estimate based on your specific situation. We offer a variety of financial options and will work with you to fit a root canal into your budget. Questions? Visit our financial page to learn more!Schedule Your Consultation
