The Dental Implant Procedure

The first step in the process involves numbing the gums completely with a local anesthetic, so the procedure is pain-free. Then, your dentist will make an incision in the gums and place the titanium implant. Over the course of several weeks, the gums will heal and the implant will begin to fuse with the jawbone in a process called osseointegration. Once the implant has been fully anchored, your dentist will attach a natural-looking crown to the top of the implant that will be fully functional and blend in with the rest of the teeth.

Benefits of Utilizing Dental Implants

Although they are considered a more invasive procedure, there are many benefits to choosing dental implants over other dental restorations. These benefits include:

  • Durable, long-lasting restorative option
  • Improve ability to speak and eat
  • Improve appearance of the smile
  • Help preserve bone density
  • Can be treated like a natural tooth

Am I a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

The good news is, dental implants work well for many patients who are suffering from tooth loss. If you are a tobacco user, have periodontal disease, diabetes, or an autoimmune disorder that slows down the healing process, dental implants may not be the best choice for you. Additionally, dental implant surgery is not recommended for children, as their jawbones are still developing. Otherwise, dental implants tend to be a great choice as long as you have:

  • Healthy jawbone density
  • Healthy gums
  • Good overall health
  • Good oral health
  • Patience for the implant process

Should I get a bridge or a dental implant?

Bridges and implants are both excellent tooth replacement options, and the treatment you ultimately decide to go with will depend on your unique wants and needs. Bridges are less invasive and less of an investment, but they are not nearly as durable or long-lasting as an implant. Dental implants require more recovery time, but that is because the implant has to be surgically implanted in the jawbone, which is what helps it remain stable and sturdy.

Can you get a temporary tooth while waiting for an implant?

Our team would be happy to provide you with a temporary tooth, partial denture, or another restorative option that you can wear during your implant process. If you need a few dental extractions, temporary restorations can be used before your titanium post is placed while your gums are healing, which can take about ten weeks. They can also be used after the post is placed while your gums are healing and the artificial tooth is not ready to be attached yet.

How painful are dental implant procedures?

The procedure itself is not painful, as we always administer a local anesthetic before any restorative work is performed. You are likely to experience some soreness or discomfort after the numbness wears off, so we recommend having some pain medication and an ice pack on hand that you can use after your appointments. If you are anxious about an upcoming implant appointment, we offer several relaxing dental sedation options that you can choose to utilize.
