Why Do Teeth Turn Yellow?

Patients often ask us about options for teeth whitening. We understand the concern. Yellowing teeth can cause a lack of confidence in your smile and overall appearance. But what makes our teeth turn yellow, and what can you do about it? We want to give you the information you need in order to make a well-informed decision about what to do if you’re looking to brighten your smile.

Extrinsic Staining

You may already be aware that certain activities and foods can cause staining on the enamel of the teeth, giving them a dull or brownish appearance. Smoking or using tobacco can be a culprit, as are some of our favorite beverages. Tea, coffee, and red wine can all cause extrinsic staining on teeth. The good news is, there are ways to correct this that are minimally invasive and won’t mean giving up your daily cup of joe.

Intrinsic Staining

While extrinsic staining refers to superficial staining of the enamel, intrinsic staining occurs when the outer layer of teeth, or the enamel, erode to reveal the dentin. Dentin is the underlying layer of your teeth, and has a more yellowish hue. Intrinsic staining happens naturally with aging and demineralization. It can also be corrected, but over-the-counter whitening toothpaste is unlikely to do the trick.

What to Do About Teeth Yellowing

First, please know that some yellowing is common and not a sign of an unhealthy mouth. For extrinsic staining, be sure to drink plenty of water, especially after consuming dark beverages like coffee. If you use tobacco products, try to quit. This is good for your dental and overall health. Finally, using whitening products for your daily routine can help. For mild tooth discoloration, a whitening toothpaste with hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide can help. For more serious extrinsic and intrinsic stains, we recommend professional teeth whitening. Compared to store-bought whitening kits, professional whitening is stronger, more effective, longer-lasting, and safer than over-the-counter options.
