Oral Health Care As We Age

elderly couple smile at each other knowing their oral health care is on track

At South Texas Smiles, we are proud to provide quality care to patients of all ages. From age 2 to 92, our team is trained in responding to your different oral health needs as you age. Today, we want to focus on oral health as we age. Whether you are simply educating yourself or you are caring for an aging loved one, it is important to be aware of the way our mouths change as we get older and the special considerations that result from aging.

Your Teeth As You Age

Our mouths are constantly changing. As we age, the nerves in our teeth can become smaller. This can result in an aging adult being less susceptible to tooth pain due to cavities or infection. However, regular visits to our office can help. Our team keeps a close eye on changes to your mouth and can diagnose and treat minor problems before they develop into major issues.

Can Natural Teeth Last a Lifetime?

We’d like to bust a popular myth around aging adults and their teeth: losing your natural teeth is not inevitable! While many older adults may use dentures or dental implants to restore missing teeth, others get a lifetime’s worth of use out of their natural teeth! Oral hygiene at home plays a huge role here: brushing teeth twice daily for two minutes each time and flossing each day can help preserve natural teeth.

Keep Up with Regular Visits to Our San Antonio Dental Office

As your loved ones age, make sure they still receive regular dental care. Most aging adults should visit our office every six months or so for professional cleanings and exams. Elderly people with a complicated oral health history may require more frequent visits. Your oral hygiene only becomes more important as you age. To ask our team any questions about caring for your teeth as you get older or to schedule your next appointment, call us today!
