Jaw Treatment to Address Chronic Headaches

A brunette man by the ocean in a blue and red plaid shirt clutches his head in pain due to a chronic headache

If you suffer from chronic headaches or jaw pain but you can’t quite pinpoint the cause, it might be caused by a TMJ disorder. In this blog post, we’ll explore the meaning behind the acronym TMJ and let you know what you can do if it’s causing you trouble.

What Is the TMJ?

TMJ actually stands for the name of the joint that connects your jawbone to the skull–the temporomandibular joint. You have two of these joints, one on each side of your head. It’s fairly common for people to experience varying degrees of pain, swelling, and discomfort in this area. When that happens, you’re experiencing TMD, or temporomandibular joint disorder. The exact cause of TMD is specific to each individual, and is sometimes even unknown, but can be related to chronic teeth clenching or grinding, arthritis, genetics, or injury.

Symptoms of TMD

If you have TMD, there are a variety of symptoms that may present themselves. The most common is pain or tenderness in that area of the jaw occurring on one or both sides. But the pain can even extend past the jaw area, causing persistent headaches. Additionally, people often experience problems and pain when chewing and speaking, and some even find that their jaw regularly clicks, pops, or locks.

How to Ease Your Headaches & Jaw Pain

If you suffer from chronic headaches of unknown cause, or any of the other aforementioned symptoms, you could have TMD. One of the best things you can do is to talk with our expert team. We will examine your jaw and do our best to diagnose the problem. While in some cases TMD can go away on its own, many patients require professional treatment. A variety of methods are used to treat TMD, including pain medication, mouthguards and other dental appliances, physical therapy, and, sometimes, surgery. If you’re dealing with TMD, we will assess your situation and determine which direction you’ll need to go in.
