At South Texas Smiles, we are proud providers of biological dentistry. We’d love to tell you a little bit about our approach to dental health so you can have a better idea of what our San Antonio practice could do for you!
The Connection Between Mouth & Body
The main idea behind biological dentistry is that there’s an important connection between your oral health and your overall health. Each affects the other in significant ways, and biological dentists use that idea to look after the overall wellness of their patients.
For example, our preventive and restorative dental services help combat poor oral health and its associated systemic health problems, such as heart disease and diabetes. And while some dental offices use silver fillings to treat cavities, we opt for biologically compatible mercury-free fillings that are safer for your body. Our office can also safely remove your old amalgam fillings and replace them with mercury-free fillings to protect you from the potential negative effects of mercury.
Holistic Dentistry
Biological dentistry is also sometimes referred to as holistic dentistry. The word “holistic” is used because this type of dentistry takes a whole-body view of a patient’s health rather than just zeroing in on their mouth alone. While a traditional dentist may solely emphasize proper brushing and flossing technique, we look at the bigger picture to offer additional nontoxic treatment modalities that can improve your health.
Credentials & Philosophy
The main difference between a traditional dentist and a holistic dentist is their philosophy, specifically what they focus on when treatment planning and what dental procedures they do or don’t offer at their practice.
Our Ana Maldonado, DMD, loves promoting overall body wellness with natural dental care. She completed an accredited dental program like other dentists, but is also board certified in Naturopathic Medicine and Integrative Biological Dental Medicine.
